Whatever causes prostate cancer to develop in a man’s body has yet to be determined by medical scientists. However, researchers have begun to identify the factors that are linked to the probable causes of prostate cancer. These factors that may cause the development of prostate cancer include a man’s genetic disposition to develop the disease, hormonal influences and environmental influences.
A man’s age is seen to affect the development of prostate cancer in the body. As his age advances, his risk of becoming afflicted with the disease increases. According to statistics, fewer than 1 in 100,000 men under the age of 40 ever develop prostate cancer. In contrast, there are 1,146 out of 100,000 men aged 65 years old and above who have the disease. This puts the median age of men getting diagnosed with prostate cancer at approximately 70 years old.
Genetics also plays a big part in the formation of prostate cancer cells in the body. Researchers have determined that African Americans are more prone to getting the disease more than Asians or white Americans. It was also observed that men with close blood relatives (parents and siblings) who have been diagnosed with either prostate cancer or breast cancer are more likely to develop prostate cancer themselves.
Lifetime exposure to testosterone is another factor that is said to lead to the development of prostate cancer. This is also probably why the risk of men getting this disease increases as they age. The longer a man’s body has been producing testosterone, the more likely that he will get prostate cancer.
Lastly, environmental factors are also seen to cause prostate cancer in men. According to research, the likelihood of developing prostate cancer rises if the person smokes, consumes high levels of saturated fat in his diet and is regularly exposed to the chemical cadmium.
